"Nippon" is the name given to porcelain which was made in Japan between 1891 and 1921. "Nippon" is the Japanese word for Japan which had to be put on imported items according to U.S. law. In 1921, this law was changed to state that merchandise brought into the U.S. has to have the country of origin, on each item, in English.
The highest quality porcelain was made in the Nortake Factory and marked with a "green m in wreath" which is the back stamp appearing on these ashtrays. The pieces are entirely painted by hand.
